I Want to Call You Sweet Mama

I Want to Call You Sweet Mama—Cliff Edwards, 1933 (recorded April 1, 2012) Here’s a song written by Ukulele Ike himself. It’s a spry, upbeat little tune that I recorded in quick, laid-back fashion. I added whistling parts during the break and at the outro, and I used filters on duplicate tracks to adjust the pitch up an octave and down an octave in the mix. It’s a gimmick that makes plain whistling sound like an ocarina.

Edwards was my first and is still my most important uke-music influence. I’ve been playing this song since I first heard it on an Edwards compilation record in the early 1980s. Fun stuff!

Nice touch with the whistling, maestro!! It suggests that Edwards’ high register stuff. Good one, Patsy!! – Tom

Hey Patsy, I don’t think I’ll be back. Feeling my age. Last summer I thought I’d better get around because the energy and ambition was waning. So, I did a lot of traveling then. I’d really like to get back some day, but I don’t think I will. Just trying to get my songs in order via the vids. Keep your tunes coming. They always provide a harbor from the rat race of today’s insane politics.

Yours – Tom

Ahh, Tom, I hope you get better enough to make your way back here at some point. I’m in a no-travel boat myself, for a variety of reasons. Would love to see you again one day. Let’s keep the options open, eh? Thanks for the kind words.

Your videos are way ahead of me…I have some catching up to do! Fantastic stuff.

Thanks, pal.
