I’ll Remember April

I’ll Remember April—G. de Paul/P. Johnston/D. Raye, 1941 (Recorded April 23, 2012) I figured I’d do a song with “April” in the title, seeing as it’s now the month of April and all. This much-recorded popular song made its debut to the world in, of all things, an Abbott and Costello comedy western called Ride ’em Cowboy.

I played it straight through using the La Paula uke. I had a hard time deciding what to do during the instrumental break. I tried whistling, clapping, banging on the furniture…I even tried musical saw until the thing kicked back and gouged my calf. Eventually I came upon the scat solo you hear here. I duped the scat track and lowered the pitch an octave, then I combined the normal track and the pitched track to get a strange, inside-a-barrel sound.

Thanks to Carmen McRae for her outstanding version of this tune.
